Your route and departure time
From Zoetermeer the standard route runs along the A12 towards The Hague, then joins the A4 at the Prins Clausplein interchange heading for Amsterdam. You follow that past Zoeterwoude and Leiden as far as the Schiphol exit, a straightforward run that takes around 40 minutes outside the rush hour.
There are two familiar bottlenecks: the Prins Clausplein itself, and the A4 between Zoeterwoude-Dorp and Hoofddorp, both of which fill up during the morning peak (roughly 06:30-09:30) and the evening peak (16:00-19:00).
Within those windows, allow for a journey that can rise to around 55 minutes; the driver factors that in when planning the pick-up. If you live on the eastern side, near Oosterheem or the Dwarstocht business park, you reach the A12 via the eastern slip road; from Meerzicht and Driemanspolder you are on it just as quickly from the west.
Leave before 06:00 and the A4 is almost always clear, so the 40-minute run is comfortable.
