Your ride from Leiden
Let's be honest: from Leiden the train is a strong alternative, because the direct intercity from Leiden Centraal puts you at Schiphol in roughly 15 minutes. A taxi via Schipholride costs a fixed price from €85 (Comfort, VW Passat or similar) and covers the 29 kilometres to the airport in about 30 minutes outside rush hour. So when does the taxi win? When you'd otherwise have to get to the station first from Stevenshof or the Merenwijk, when you're juggling suitcases and children, when you're leaving for an early flight, or when you're travelling as a group — a Van for 5-8 people costs €110 in total, often more practical than separate train tickets. And compared with taking your own car: a week of parking at Schiphol adds up quickly, whereas here you know in advance exactly what the whole ride costs, including VAT, luggage and Schiphol parking charges.
The standard route from Leiden runs via the Plesmanlaan to the A44 towards Amsterdam. At the Burgerveen interchange the A44 becomes the A4, after which the Schiphol exit brings you out at the terminal. If you live on the east side of the city, for example in the Roodenburgerdistrict, the driver will often take the Hoge Rijndijk and join the A4 straight away at Zoeterwoude. Outside rush hour you cover the 29 kilometres in about 30 minutes. During the morning peak (roughly 07:00-09:00) the A4 between Burgerveen and Schiphol is the bottleneck and the journey can stretch to around 50 minutes; in the evening peak that mainly applies to the return direction. If you book a ride within those windows, allow a wider margin towards your check-in deadline.
Pick-up in Leiden
A driver will be ready for you in every Leiden district, from Stevenshof and the Merenwijk to Leiden-Noord and the Haagwegkwartier. In the low-traffic city centre, with its narrow canals and many one-way streets, the driver agrees with you on an easily accessible pick-up point around the corner. Pick-up is also possible at Leiden Centraal, Lammenschans or De Vink, or at your office on the Bio Science Park along the Plesmanlaan. Bear in mind that the city centre is largely closed off on 3 October (Leidens Ontzet); on that day, plan your departure from a point outside the centre.

Pick-up from Schiphol
The return journey to Leiden also takes about 30 minutes outside rush hour; if you land during the evening peak, it can be busier towards the exits near Leiden. There is no night surcharge, so even after a late landing you pay the same fixed price. If you live in the low-traffic city centre, the driver will drop you off as close to your door as possible.
Frequently asked questions
Flying at 08:00 — how early do I need to be ready in Leiden?+
Work it back: for most flights you want to be at Schiphol 2 hours beforehand, so around 06:00. At that time the ride from Leiden takes about 30 minutes, because the A44 and A4 are still quiet so early. A pick-up time around 05:15 gives you a comfortable margin, even with luggage to drop off.
Isn't the train from Leiden to Schiphol faster?+
That's right: the direct intercity from Leiden Centraal takes around 15 minutes and runs frequently during the day. A taxi wins on door-to-door convenience: no trip to the station, no hauling suitcases across platforms, and with 5-8 people the Van at €110 in total is often more practical than separate tickets for everyone.
Which route does the driver take and how bad is rush hour?+
Usually via the A44 towards Amsterdam and then on via the A4 at the Burgerveen interchange to the Schiphol exit. Outside rush hour you're there in about 30 minutes; during the morning peak that can stretch to around 50 minutes. If you leave between 07:00 and 09:00, plan a bit of extra margin.
Will I be picked up in every Leiden district, including Stevenshof or the Merenwijk?+
Yes, Schipholride arranges pick-up throughout Leiden: from Stevenshof, the Merenwijk and Leiden-Noord to the Professorenwijk and the city centre. In the low-traffic centre you agree on a sensible pick-up point in advance, for example at the edge of the canal or street where you're staying.
Can I make a business booking from the Leiden Bio Science Park?+
Certainly. The Bio Science Park sits right next to Leiden Centraal along the Plesmanlaan, practically on the A44 on-ramp — outside rush hour you're at Schiphol in about 30 minutes. For business rides you can choose Premium (Mercedes E-Class or similar, €100) or VIP (S-Class or similar, €165), with free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance.
