Seven Zaan towns come together in the municipality of Zaanstad (Zaandam, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk, Wormerveer and more), and from every one of them Schiphol is a short hop south: 32 kilometres, around 32 minutes outside the rush hour.

Schipholride quotes one fixed all-in fare for the trip: Comfort at €60 (VW Passat or similar), Premium at €75 (Mercedes E-Class or similar), a Van for 5-8 people at €80 (V-Class or similar) and VIP at €145 (S-Class or similar).

The logical way south from the Zaan region is the A8: it begins at Zaandam, crosses the North Sea Canal and merges into the A10 ring at the Coenplein interchange. The driver follows the western ring for a stretch, switches to the A4 at the De Nieuwe Meer interchange and reaches the Schiphol exit a few minutes later, roughly 32 minutes for the 32 kilometres when traffic is flowing.

The weak link is the A10-west and the Coentunnel: in the morning rush, broadly between 07:00 and 09:30, and again at the end of the afternoon, queues can push the journey to well over three quarters of an hour.

Your driver builds that into the pick-up time and can opt for the second Coentunnel tube or a route via the A5 past Halfweg when the jams persist. Travelling from one of the northern towns such as Krommenie or Wormerveer means a short stretch of N-road before joining the A8.

Drivers collect in every Zaan town: Zaandam including the Poelenburg district, Koog aan de Zaan, Zaandijk by the Zaanse Schans, Wormerveer, Krommenie, Assendelft and Westzaan. Give your full address when booking and the car pulls up at the door, though in the old centre of Zaandam, or along the narrow dike streets of Zaandijk, agreeing a stopping point just around the corner is sometimes more practical; you can note this in the booking field.

Zaandam and Zaandam Kogerveld stations sit on the intercity line to Schiphol, but with suitcases or an early start a door-to-door car is usually calmer than changing trains.
