The journey splits into three parts. First comes the island leg to the ferry port at 't Horntje: from Den Burg, De Koog, Oosterend or another village that means a short run over island roads. Then follows the TESO crossing to Den Helder, which takes about half an hour including boarding and disembarking.

On the mainland the driver picks up the N9 southwards past Schagen and Alkmaar, where the road becomes the A9 towards Beverwijk and Badhoevedorp, finishing via the A4 at the Schiphol exit. Island leg and mainland together come to about 107 kilometres of driving, good for roughly 121 minutes outside the peaks, plus the sailing.

The ferry timetable sets the rhythm: your driver times the island pick-up around a sailing with plenty of slack, so a missed boat or a queue on the A9 near Alkmaar never endangers the flight.

From Texel it is the ferry that sets the pace, not the motorway. The journey begins with a stretch of island road to the ferry port at 't Horntje. Then comes the TESO crossing to Den Helder, which takes about half an hour including driving on and off, and after that the N9 and the A9 lead south.

A European flight at 07:00 means being at Schiphol by 05:00, two hours ahead. With around 121 minutes of travel time and 15 minutes of slack, the sums on paper give a pick-up at 02:40. In practice your pick-up time is matched to a sailing with enough margin, so for an early flight like that you agree the time carefully in advance.

An intercontinental flight at 19:00 leaves more room. Three hours ahead means 16:00 in the departures hall, and with the afternoon rush on the A9 near Alkmaar the planning works with around 176 minutes. Including 15 minutes in reserve, you are collected at 12:45, in Den Burg or De Cocksdorp, Oudeschild or De Waal.

That margin absorbs a later boat or a queue near Alkmaar. The fare stays the same however early your day begins: Comfort costs €165 whatever the hour, and no surcharge applies for nights, weekends or the rush hour.

All the Texel villages are served: Den Burg as the main town, the seaside resort of De Koog, De Cocksdorp in the north, Oosterend, Oudeschild by the harbour and De Waal. State your address and village when booking; the driver collects at the door and takes you to the ferry port at 't Horntje for the crossing.

The island naturally has no railway station (every journey to the mainland goes by boat), which is exactly why a taxi that folds the ferry times into the plan is so practical: nothing to puzzle out yourself, and on the mainland you simply drive on.
