The journey splits into three parts. First comes the island leg to the ferry port at 't Horntje: from Den Burg, De Koog, Oosterend or another village that means a short run over island roads. Then follows the TESO crossing to Den Helder, which takes about half an hour including boarding and disembarking.
On the mainland the driver picks up the N9 southwards past Schagen and Alkmaar, where the road becomes the A9 towards Beverwijk and Badhoevedorp, finishing via the A4 at the Schiphol exit. Island leg and mainland together come to about 107 kilometres of driving, good for roughly 121 minutes outside the peaks, plus the sailing.
The ferry timetable sets the rhythm: your driver times the island pick-up around a sailing with plenty of slack, so a missed boat or a queue on the A9 near Alkmaar never endangers the flight.
