The standard route leaves Leeuwarden on the A31, running past Franeker and Harlingen to the Afsluitdijk, where the A7 carries you 32 kilometres across the dyke between the Wadden Sea and the IJsselmeer into North Holland.
From there the A7 continues past Hoorn and Purmerend to the Zaandam interchange, and the A8, the Coentunnel (A10) and the A4 bring you to the Schiphol exit. Outside the rush hour this is a quiet drive: the Frisian section and the Afsluitdijk itself rarely jam.
The delay is almost always in the final quarter — between Purmerend, the Coentunnel and the A4 it clogs up on weekdays around 7:00-9:30 and 16:00-18:30, and then the total driving time can stretch to roughly 160 minutes.
When the Afsluitdijk is closed for maintenance, which happens regularly, the southern alternative runs via the A32 and A6 past Heerenveen and Lelystad; the driver picks whichever option is fastest on the day.
Pick-up in Leeuwarden
You can be collected anywhere in Leeuwarden: from Bilgaard and the Vrijheidswijk in the north to Huizum, Nijlan, Aldlan and Zuiderburen on the south side, and Camminghaburen out east. How early should I leave Leeuwarden for an early morning flight?+
Allow around 120 minutes of driving outside the rush hour, plus a good two hours for check-in and security at Schiphol. For an 08:00 flight that means a pick-up around 03:30 in Leeuwarden. Because there is no night surcharge, you simply pay the fixed price from €220 for such an early departure.
Is the taxi faster than the Intercity from Leeuwarden to Schiphol?+
Honest answer: there is a direct Intercity that takes about 2 hours and 20 minutes, so outside the rush hour the car is a little quicker at roughly 120 minutes, and clearly faster door to door. A taxi wins above all with plenty of luggage, flights before 07:00 or after midnight, and when three or more of you are travelling together.
What happens if the Afsluitdijk is closed on my travel day?+
The Afsluitdijk is regularly closed at night for maintenance. The driver checks this in advance and then routes via the A32 and A6 past Heerenveen and Lelystad instead. That detour is a touch longer, so for early flights the departure is planned with extra margin. A change of route never changes your fixed price.
Can I be collected in Zuiderburen, Camminghaburen or at the station?+
