How busy Schiphol Airport is depends on the time of day, the day of the week and the season.
Peak times and busiest days last checked on .

Check the current crowds and tomorrow's forecast on schiphol.nl or in the free Schiphol app: both show how many passengers are expected for each part of the day, for the coming days too.
As a rule of thumb, it is busiest between 05:30 and 09:00 (the morning wave), with a second peak between 16:00 and 19:00. Between 21:00 and 05:00, tonight included, the terminal is at its quietest. During the school holidays it is busier all day; if you are flying out tomorrow in the morning wave, expect the longest queues at security.
You can find the current expected queue time at security on schiphol.nl.
The busiest days at Schiphol are Friday, Sunday and Monday. The biggest peak falls in the morning wave from 05:30 to 09:00; a second peak follows between 16:00 and 19:00.
During the May holiday, the summer holiday (July–August), the autumn holiday and around Christmas it is busier than usual throughout the day. After the May holiday peak at the end of April, the summer holiday is now the busiest period of 2026. The changeover Saturdays in July and August are traditionally the busiest single days of the year.
On peak days in particular, you want your transport to the airport sorted in advance. See what a taxi to Schiphol costs (fixed prices per town, even at holiday peaks) or book your taxi to Schiphol straight away at a fixed price upfront.
You see the fixed price before you book, even in the morning peak and during the school holidays.
Book your ride in advanceYes, for most European flights, arriving at Schiphol 2 hours beforehand is enough, on an average travel day too. For intercontinental flights Schiphol advises three hours.
If you fly on a peak day (a Friday, a Sunday or during the school holidays), allow an extra half hour and check your airline's latest advice on the day you travel.
Busiest peak
The morning wave, with the most departing flights. Many holiday flights, from Transavia for example, also leave at this time. Expect long queues at security and bag drop. Allow plenty of extra time and leave home on time.
Second peak
The late afternoon and early evening wave, often coinciding with rush hour on the A4 and A9 towards the airport. Allow for delays on the way.
Quieter
Between the waves it is usually quieter at security. A flight around midday generally means shorter queues.
Quietest
Late in the evening and overnight the terminal is at its quietest. You can book 24/7 with no night surcharge, so an early or late ride costs nothing extra.
One of the busiest weeks of the year. Lots of families leave at the same time, so expect extra queuing at security.
High season. Weeks of heavier crowds, with peaks around the start and end of the school holidays in each region.
A short but intense peak. The Saturdays at the start and end are especially busy.
Busy departure and arrival days around 23–24 December and the days after New Year.
Around public holidays (Easter, Ascension Day, Whitsun), the Fridays and the first day of the holiday are the peaks.

Use the Schiphol app or schiphol.nl: they show the expected crowds at security for each part of the day, for today, tomorrow and the days ahead. If your flight allows it, plan to go through security at a quieter time.
Recommended: about 2 hours before a European flight and about 3 hours before an intercontinental flight. Add half an hour during holiday peaks. See our travel planning page for the formula to work back from your flight time.
With many airlines, Transavia among them, online check-in opens about 30 hours before departure. Do it at home and travel as light as you can: hand luggage only means no queue at the check-in desk or bag drop, often the biggest time saver.
With a taxi booked in advance, you are guaranteed to reach the airport on time, without the stress of parking or a missed train. The price is fixed upfront, even during holiday peaks.
Travelling from outside the Randstad? See the fixed price and recommended pickup time for your route, for example a taxi from Nijmegen to Schiphol, a taxi from Groningen to Schiphol or a taxi from Amersfoort to Schiphol, or smaller places such as Papendrecht, Woerden, Waalwijk and Vught. Find your town on the all locations page.
Or do you live close to the airport, in Lijnden, Halfweg or Zwanenburg for example? Then a small buffer is usually enough. The fixed price is on the page for your town.
Check today's crowds on schiphol.nl or in the free Schiphol app: they show the expected crowds at security for each part of the day, with updates on the day itself. It is usually busiest between 05:30 and 09:00 and between 16:00 and 19:00.
You can find tomorrow's forecast on schiphol.nl and in the Schiphol app: Schiphol publishes how busy it expects each part of the day to be, including for the days ahead. Flying out tomorrow in the morning wave (05:30–09:00)? Expect the longest queues and allow a bigger buffer.
Yes. On its website and in the Schiphol app, Schiphol publishes how many passengers it expects for each part of the day and whether you should allow for queues at security. Checking on the day you travel gives the best picture; the advice is updated throughout the day.
The morning wave (05:30–09:00) is usually the busiest, followed by the late afternoon (16:00–19:00). Across the week, Friday, Sunday and Monday tend to be the busiest. During the holiday periods (the May holiday, summer, autumn and Christmas) it is busier all day.
Schiphol has no official Black Saturday like the one on the French motorways. The busiest Saturdays of 2026 fall around the start of the May holiday (late April) and the start of the summer holiday in July, when the different regions begin their school holidays shortly after one another. Expect long queues at security on those days, so come well prepared and arrive in good time.
Allow about 2 hours for a European flight and 3 hours for an intercontinental flight. During busy holiday periods an extra half hour is wise. Always follow your airline's latest advice.
If you can, plan your flight outside the morning and late afternoon peaks, check in online, travel with hand luggage only and be on time. Book your transport to Schiphol in advance at a fixed price, even on busy days. That way you don't have to wait or rush.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are usually the quietest days at Schiphol; Friday, Sunday and Monday are the busiest. If you also choose a departure between 11:00 and 14:00 or after 21:00, you avoid the flight waves. Outside the school holidays, for example in March, April (outside the May holiday), June or November, it is quieter throughout the day.
Early in the day: the first flights (before about 08:00) are the least likely to be delayed, because delays build up as the day goes on. Bear in mind that the terminal is at its busiest then (the morning wave), so arrive in good time. If you want a calm check-in and a low risk of delay, choose a flight around midday on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.
No, at night it is actually quiet: between about 21:00 and 05:00, tonight included, the terminal is at its quietest. Taxis booked through SchipholRide run 24/7 at the same fixed price, with no night surcharge. Handy for early or late flights, and for your ride from Schiphol after a late landing.
