From Purmerend you join the A7 towards Amsterdam almost immediately via the N244 or the Laan der Continenten. At the Zaandam interchange you switch to the A8, then via the Coenplein through the Coentunnel onto the A10-West ring road.
At the De Nieuwe Meer interchange you change to the A4, which takes you straight to the Schiphol exit. Outside rush hour you cover those 38 km in roughly ±40 minutes. During the morning peak (broadly 07:00-09:00) the A7/A8 stretch towards the Coentunnel is the main bottleneck and travel time can rise to ±55 minutes; in the evening peak the same applies to the A10-West and the link onto the A4.
The driver keeps an eye on current traffic and picks an alternative where needed, for example via the N235 past Ilpendam and Amsterdam-Noord if the A7 is gridlocked.
