The ride begins with the crossing of Voorne-Putten towards the mainland: the N57 or the N218 carries you over the island to the A15 connection at Spijkenisse and the Hartelkanaal, after which the A15 and the A4 lead north past Rotterdam, Delft and Den Haag towards Leiden and the Schiphol exit.

In a quiet spell, the 83 kilometres take about 71 minutes. The island section usually flows freely; delays cluster on the A15 and A4 around Rotterdam and Den Haag, where the morning and evening rush slows the flow.

In those windows the journey can grow to around an hour and a half. Because of the distance and the congestion risk, your driver sets the pick-up time generously, so a jam near Rotterdam or Den Haag never endangers the flight.

Crossing the island itself is usually calm. The N57 or the N218 brings you onto the A15 near Spijkenisse and the Hartel Canal, and only then does the part start where the clock counts: the A15 and A4 past Rotterdam, Delft and The Hague.

On a quiet night the whole 83-kilometre ride takes 71 minutes. In the afternoon rush that can stretch to 103 minutes, as traffic backs up around Rotterdam and The Hague.

You can see that gap in the two worked examples. For a European flight at 07:00 you should be at Schiphol by 05:00, so you get in at 03:30, well before the first queue near Rotterdam. Flying long-haul at 19:00, you want to be at the airport at 16:00 and are collected as early as 14:00, two hours before that arrival because of the long rush-hour drive.

Both times include 15 minutes of margin. Leaving from Oudenhoorn or Nieuwenhoorn rather than the fortified town or Nieuw-Helvoet? Enter that address; the sum barely changes, since the time is mostly decided on the motorway. At 03:30 you pay the same as at 14:00. There is no night, weekend or peak surcharge, and Comfort costs €135.

The whole of Hellevoetsluis is served: the historic fortress with its dry dock and harbour, the centre, and districts such as Nieuw-Helvoet, Struytse Hoeck and the new-build on the eastern side. Nearby villages on Voorne-Putten, including Oudenhoorn and Nieuwenhoorn, fall within the pick-up area as well.

Note the complete address and place name at reservation and the driver arrives at the door. Hellevoetsluis has no railway station (the tracks stop on the mainland), so nearly every ride starts at home. A pick-up at one of the marinas or at Fort Haerlem is equally easy to arrange.
