Zaandam is close to Schiphol: via the A4, the A10 and the A8, through the Coentunnel, you are there in about 25 minutes outside rush hour. If the Amsterdam ring road is jammed, the driver switches to the A5 (Westrandweg) towards the A8.
You get out wherever suits you: Inverdan, the centre, Poelenburg, Westerwatering or the Zaanse Schans.
