The receipt: always ask for it
A Dutch taxi driver must offer you a ride receipt (ritbon). It is your proof if something turns out to be wrong later: it holds much of the information you need for a complaint, such as the taxi company and the number plate (Dutch government).
You can complain to the driver or the taxi company, by letter, by phone or directly in the taxi. The company must respond within 6 weeks. If you disagree with the response, you can go to a disputes committee; most taxi companies are members of the Geschillencommissie Taxivervoer (Dutch government).
Tipping in a Dutch taxi
- Tipping is not necessary: drivers do not expect it, because taxis in the Netherlands are already fairly expensive (DutchReview).
- If you are happy with the ride, you can round up the fare or give one or two euros (DutchReview).
- On a metered ride you pay what the meter shows; on the meter, statutory maximum fares apply in 2026: for a regular car a starting fare of €4.31, €3.17 per kilometre and €0.52 per minute (Dutch government). A tip comes on top and is voluntary.
SchipholRide as one of the options
