How to plan it
IJmuiden has no train station of its own, so as a foot passenger with luggage the door-to-door taxi is the relaxed option. Here is how to handle each leg.
The overnight crossing from Newcastle docks in IJmuiden in the morning. Book your taxi ahead and your driver is waiting at the agreed spot by the terminal when you walk out; the drive to Schiphol takes about 35 minutes outside rush hour. Schiphol recommends arriving 2 hours before a European flight and 3 hours before an intercontinental one — so count back from your departure time.
Flying in on the day of your crossing? Your flight is tracked live, your pickup time shifts automatically if it is delayed, and you get 60 minutes of free waiting time after landing. Your driver waits in the arrivals hall with a name sign and takes you straight to the Sluisplein. Check your DFDS travel documents for the check-in deadline and plan a comfortable margin.
Not flying at all, but heading into the city? That ride works in the same booking form: enter the ferry terminal and your hotel in Amsterdam, Haarlem or anywhere else in the Netherlands, and the fixed price appears immediately. Door-to-door, with no dragging suitcases between buses and trains.
No car on board
Without a car on board, the last miles on either side of the North Sea are the awkward part of the journey. A pre-booked taxi closes that gap: your driver is ready at the terminal or in the Schiphol arrivals hall, and you pay one fixed amount per car that you knew before you left home. Travelling as a family or group of up to 8? The Van, a Mercedes V-Class, has a separate luggage compartment for 8 suitcases — hand luggage rides inside the cabin.
Each passenger brings 1 suitcase plus 1 piece of hand luggage free as standard. Booking is done in a few minutes online, and you pay by card or iDEAL when you book — no cash needed on the day.
